The short answer
YouTube ads typically cost $0.01-$0.10 per view for skippable in-stream ads, or $4-$15 per thousand impressions for impression-based formats in the US. Narrow B2B audiences cost more. There's no minimum, but $1,500-$3,000 a month is a sensible starting point to test two or three videos against well-chosen audiences.
YouTube ad costs by format
| Format | How you pay | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Skippable in-stream | Per view (30s watched, or full ad if shorter, or a click) or per conversion | $0.01-$0.10 per view |
| Non-skippable in-stream | Per 1,000 impressions | $6-$15 CPM |
| Bumper ads (6s) | Per 1,000 impressions | $3-$10 CPM |
| In-feed video | When someone clicks to watch | Similar to or a little above in-stream CPV |
| Demand Gen (video and image) | Per click or per conversion, bid-strategy dependent | Varies with audience and goal |
Ranges are for the US; UK costs are broadly similar. Narrow B2B audiences, Q4 and premium placements push prices up.
Why cost per view is the wrong number to optimise
It's easy to get cheap views on YouTube. Broad audiences, mobile app placements and videos that make people curious enough to watch 30 seconds will all push CPV down. None of that means you're reaching buyers.
Better numbers to judge YouTube on are cost per conversion (for Demand Gen and conversion-focused campaigns), cost per engaged visit to your site, and changes in branded search and direct traffic when YouTube spend goes up or down. Our YouTube ads agency page explains how we measure it.
How much to budget for YouTube ads
| Goal | Monthly budget | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Remarketing to site visitors | $300-$1,000 | Limited by the size of your audience |
| Testing prospecting videos | $1,500-$3,000 | Two or three videos, a few audiences |
| Ongoing demand generation | $5,000+ | Enough reach to move branded search |
What makes YouTube ads more expensive
Narrow audiences
Specific job titles or small custom segments cost more per view, but can be worth it for B2B.
Weak openings
If people skip in the first five seconds, you pay less per impression but get little from it. Strong hooks improve everything downstream.
Q4 competition
Retail advertisers push up video prices before the holidays, like on every platform.
Premium placements
Reserving top channels or YouTube Select inventory costs more than open-auction campaigns.
