Google Ads cost for accounting firms

How much does Google Ads cost for accountants?

Accounting clients are recurring: win a business client once and they might stay for years. That makes Google Ads worth a lot more than the first invoice suggests. Here's what firms typically pay and how to budget around tax season.

The short answer

Accounting firms in the US typically pay $4-$20 per click, with business accounting and specialist services at the top. Most small firms spend $1,500-$6,000 a month, with more in the run-up to tax deadlines. Because good clients stay for years, a cost per new client of several hundred dollars can still be excellent value.

Cost per click by accounting service

SearchTypical CPCNotes
Accountant near me$5-$15Mixed personal and business
Small business accountant$8-$20Recurring monthly fees; best value
Tax preparer / tax return help$4-$15Spikes before filing deadlines
Bookkeeping services$5-$15Recurring; good entry service
CPA for [industry] / specialist$6-$20Less competition, better fit
Tax problem / IRS help$10-$40Urgent and high-value, competitive

UK equivalents such as "accountant for self assessment" and "small business accountant" usually cost less, with a spike ahead of the 31 January deadline.

Recurring clients change the maths

A one-off tax return might be worth a few hundred dollars. A small business client paying a monthly fee for bookkeeping, payroll and year-end accounts can easily be worth $3,000-$10,000 a year, and many stay for five years or more.

That's why the best-performing accounting campaigns focus on business clients and niches (contractors, medical practices, ecommerce sellers, landlords) rather than broad "accountant" searches. The searchers are more specific, the competition is lighter, and the clients are worth more.

Worked example: a small business accounting campaign

A firm spending $3,000 a month on small business and niche accounting searches at around $11 per click.

Where accounting budgets get wasted

Software searches

"QuickBooks login", "Xero pricing" and "free accounting software" are some of the biggest leaks.

Jobs and courses

"Accountant salary", "CPA exam" and "accounting jobs" need to be excluded from day one.

Free tax filing seekers

People looking for free filing rarely become paying clients. Negatives and clear pricing filter them.

Same budget all year

Demand and CPCs spike before deadlines. Budgets should rise and fall with them.

How to get better clients for the same budget

  1. 1

    Lead with a niche

Campaigns and pages for the industries you know best convert better and cost less per click.

  2. 2

    Show pricing or packages

Fixed monthly packages reduce uncertainty and pre-qualify people who can afford you.

  3. 3

    Test Local Services Ads

Accountants and tax preparers are eligible for Google Screened Local Services Ads in many US areas.

  4. 4

    Plan for deadlines

Raise budgets before key filing dates and promote year-round services the rest of the time.
